14th, 16th, 17th, 18th April 2010 "Melodies of Varanasi" Concert Series Sangeet Mishra - Sarangi On tour from India! Vinod Prasanna - Bansuri Glen Kniebeiss - Tabla
Also performing on Sunday 18th April 2010 4pm to 6pm Magpie House, 48 Main St Upwey Melway 75A8 The “Melodies of Varanasi” concert brings together three virtuoso instrumentalists; two Indian musicians born into traditional musical families in the ancient holy city of Varanasi, and an Australian born tabla player who has devoted himself to the art of performing Indian classical music. Sarangi is an Indian bowed instrument with 50 strings. Its sound is considered to match the human voice most closely, and its name literally means "hundred colours", reflecting the wide range of tones and moods it can evoke. An extremely difficult instrument, the sarangi is rare to hear these days. The sound is that of ancient spiritual India. Sangeet Mishra hails from the renowned Sarangi Gharana (school) of Varanasi, India. Since his childhood he had a flair for singing and acquired a high level of proficiency in vocal under the guidance of his guru and grandfather the great maestro late Pandit Narayan Das Mishra. He received subsequent training and guidance under his grandfather Pandit Bhagwan Das Mishra - the world renowned Sarangi maestro, and his father Pandit Santosh Kumar Mishra. Sangeet has performed with leading artists all around India and the world. Bansuri is the Indian classical bamboo flute and has a beautiful mellow tone. Born into one of India’s greatest flute-playing families, award-winning bansuri maestro Vinod Prasanna shines as an outstanding performer of authentic traditional and contemporary Indian music. Vinod commands the stage with grace and tenacity, via captivating passion, technical brilliance and a wonderful performance style. Also hailing from Varanasi, Vinod’s late grandfather Pandit Vishnu Prasanna introduced him to the art of bansuri playing. His uncle, Pandit Rajendra Prasanna, then taught him and further inspired his playing. Vinod has performed in India, France, Japan, Germany and Australia. Tabla are a pair of tuned drums from Northern India, capable of producing a rich and diverse range of sounds. Australian tabla player Glen Kniebeiss has devoted himself to tabla for more than twelve years. He has studied with great masters in India, including Ustad Anthony Dass, Pandit Ishwar Lal Mishra, and Pandit Lacchu Maharaj. Glen received funding from the Australia Council for the Arts and the Ian Potter Cultural Trust to study tabla in India during 2003/04, and was again awarded funding from the Australia Council in 2010 for further tabla studies. Glen’s playing style is emotional and expressive, with subtle nuance and a very clear sound. Glen is one of the finest tabla artists in Australia and has performed at many festivals and concerts around the country. He has also performed in India, Japan, Holland, and Denmark. |
